Strawberry Hill House in Restoration Bid

In the BBC2 Restoration series, Strawberry Hill House, the gothic building at the heart of St Mary's University College, is one of 21 architectural gems across the UK competing for funds. The popular programme describes Britain's forgotten architectural heritage - buildings falling into decay because of lack of funding for restoration - and gives their supporters a platform to make the case for support.

Strawberry Hill House, designed by Horace Walpole, son of Britain's first prime minister, inspired the gothic revival. It has fallen into some disrepair in recent years despite the patronage and support of Prince Charles among others.

Vincent Cable, MP, who is a strong supporter of the bid said: "this is a wonderful but neglected building. Some years ago my son Paul and his wife Agnesa were married in St Mary's Chapel and the reception was held in Strawberry Hill House. This is when I saw its potential for the first time. There is a growing understanding and appreciation of the importance of Twickenham's historic buildings - from Marble Hill and the Octagon building via York House and Strawberry Hill House to Hampton Court - in a chain of fine historical buildings along the Thames. I do hope that this programme gives the House the profile it deserves."
