London's greenest borough is proving a magnet for allotment gardeners.

The pastime is proving so popular in Richmond upon Thames that it's "waiting room only" with people clamouring for plots. There are nearly 2,000 plots across 24 allotment sites managed by Richmond Council. Demand is so great that all sites have waiting lists.

Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Martin Elengorn, said: "This is evidence of the terrific popularity of allotment gardening in our borough. The Council does everything it can do encourage allotment gardening and we are tremendously proud of the service and the many people who lovingly tend the plots."
