Week of Peace hailed a major success

A series of successful events was staged by the Richmond upon Thames Community Safety Partnership to mark London Week of Peace (September 9-16).

The programme was launched last Wednesday (12 Sept) with a breakfast meeting at York House for community leaders and activists to discuss community safety and cohesion. It included the re-launch of a domestic violence leaflet for primary school children called "Don't Be Afraid to Tell." Around 100 pupils gathered at Whitton School the following day to hear about plans to launch a monthly young people's police liaison group to work with the Heathfield Safer Neighbourhood Team. It is hoped similar groups will be set up borough-wide. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Forum launched a new promotional leaflet at the Richmond Arms to help raise its profile and was supported by the Deputy Mayor of Richmond upon Thames, Cllr Helen Lee-Parsons. Safer Neighbourhood Teams staged a series of local events including street briefings, school visits and coffee mornings.

Sir David Williams, Cabinet Member for Communities on Richmond Council, said: "The Council, police and all our partners are committed to boosting public safety and fostering greater community relations in our borough.

"The Week of Peace was a great success and helped raise awareness of the issues we face and show what is being done to tackle them."
