Young filmmakers scoop science "Oscars"7.23.33pm GMT Fri 28th Dec 2007 Broadcasting legend Sir David Attenborough presented awards to young moviemakers at a science "Oscars" ceremony held last night (6 December). More than 100 pupils from nine schools submitted short films for the first-ever Scientific Edge Film Festival. They were challenged to make two-minute factual movies on any aspect of science. The cream of the submissions picked up awards across 10 categories at the gala awards evening in the Clarendon Hall, York House. Waldegrave School scooped the prize for best secondary school film, while the winner of the primary school category was St Mary's and St Peter's Primary. The festival was a joint initiative between Richmond Council, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and the borough's schools. It was the latest stage in the Scientific Edge project, which aims to fire young people's enthusiasm for science. Cllr Malcolm Eady, Cabinet Member for Children's Services and Education on Richmond Council, said: "I was delighted to see so many young people showing a real passion for science. It was clear that they thoroughly enjoyed making the films and also had a lot of fun at the "Oscars" night. It's vital we continue to sustain this interest in science throughout their education. We will continue working closely with our schools and partners, including NPL, to deliver an exciting, inspiring Scientific Edge programme."
