Council launches appeal for permanent foster carers

A new drive to find permanent foster carers able to support young people into adulthood has been launched by Richmond Council.

Stable and secure homes are needed for young people who have had a difficult start in life. They need people who are willing to permanently bring another child into their family. They often have friends or attend schools in the borough and need the stability of a home in the local area and a new family to care for them until they leave education and start a career. Foster carers come from all walks of life but share the caring instincts and understanding needed to help a young person through difficult times and encourage them to fulfil their potential. Parenting experience is welcome but not essential. They get extensive training from the borough's Fostering Team and receive a weekly allowance to cover their costs.

Cllr Malcolm Eady, Cabinet Member for Children's Services and Education on Richmond Council, said: "The importance of a stable and caring home environment in a young person's development cannot be overstated. Teenage years, in particular, can be a time of great emotional upheaval. For a young person who can no longer be looked after by their parents, problems can be amplified. We need more permanent foster carers to help these individuals make the transition to adulthood. It doesn't matter what background you are from or whether you have children of your own as long as you have the patience and understanding needed. Supporting a young person during their teenage years is hugely rewarding and our Fostering Team will be there to support you all the way."
