Pilot scheme to boost services for people with learning disabilities

8.21.47pm GMT Sun 23rd Mar 2008

• A PILOT scheme aimed at improving the lives of young people with learning disabilities is being launched by Richmond Council on 1 April.

Richmond is one of only seven authorities nationwide to be chosen by The Office for Disability Issues to test the pilot scheme - called "Getting A Life" - and the only London borough. It is geared towards helping people between the ages of 14 and 25, tailoring services to meet their specific needs. It also seeks to improve the link between children's and adult services so that there is a seamless transition from school to adult life.

Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Housing on Richmond Council, Cllr Denise Carr, said: "We are delighted to have been chosen by the Government to pilot the scheme. It is a tribute to the hard work of our specialist team and the creative approach they have taken to their work. We want people with learning disabilities to have same opportunities as everybody else. This is where "Getting a Life" comes in. It will ensure that the different organisations in the borough work together to support young people so they are able to make their own decisions about their future."
