Get green with reusable nappy scheme5.12.29pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 21st Apr 2008
• A RE-USABLE nappy giveaway is being launched by Richmond Council in support of National Real Nappy Week, which runs from 21 - 27 April. A competition is being held with a top prize of £100 worth of washable nappies. Full details are available on www.richmond.gov.uk/re-usable_nappies and the deadline for entries is Wednesday, 30 April. The competition is in addition to the Council scheme that offers £50 cashback on purchases of re-usables or towards the cost of a nappy laundering service. It is all part of the Council's continuing drive to reduce the waste mountain and cut greenhouse gas emissions. Cllr Martin Elengorn, Cabinet Member for Environment on Richmond Council, said: "We are very happy to support National Real Nappy Week and hope the competition encourages more parents to convert to washables. Our re-usable nappies incentive scheme has proved extremely successful, with 160 people signing up since April 2007. It has also had a positive impact on the environment, by reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill." The competition question is - "How many disposable nappies does a child wear on average from birth to potty training (two and a half years old)? A. 4,300, B. 5,500 or C. 2,800" . Answers can be sent to eco@richmond.gov.uk, with 'Real Nappy Week' in the subject line and the entrant's full name, address, post code, email address and phone number included. Alternatively, they can be submitted by post to: EcoAction offices, London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Central Depot, Langhorn Drive, Twickenham, TW2 7SG . For more information on the nappies incentive scheme call 08456 122 600 or visit the re-usable nappies page www.richmond.gov.uk/interesting_facts_about_reusable_nappies
