Toilet scheme success spreads12.10.27pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 29th Jul 2008
• THE latest part of the UK to consider adopting Richmond Council's ground-breaking Community Toilet Scheme is Llandudno, in North Wales. This week, representatives from Llandudno Town Council, visited Twickenham to learn more about the benefits of the initiative with a view to adopting it in their own area. They met Council Leader, Serge Lourie, and Environment Cabinet member, Martin Elengorn and visited a number of member premises. Under the scheme, the public can use the toilets of participating businesses without charge, whether they are customers or not. In return, the businesses receive £600 a year from the Council towards expenses. Cllr Martin Elengorn, Cllr Martin Elengorn Cabinet member for Environment on Richmond Council said: "We were delighted to meet our colleagues and show them around. Around 70 businesses are participating in the borough. Thanks to them we have more toilets available to the public than ever before, they are open for longer and are cleaner and safer to use."
