• FOR the first time residents can recycle paper-based drinks and liquid food cartons at four collection banks located across the borough.

Each year, UK beverage carton manufacturers produce 55,000 tonnes of paper-based cartons for milk, juice, sauces and other liquid food and drinks. This equals around 2.3 kilograms of cartons per household which could be recycled instead of thrown in the rubbish bin. Collection banks are located at Tesco's, North Lane, Teddington; Sainsbury's, the Avenue, Hampton; Richmond Road junction with Sion Road, Twickenham; and Lonsdale Road junction with Verdun Road, Barnes. The initiative is a partnership between Richmond Council, Tetra Pak and carton industry body ACE UK (Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment). The collections will be emptied and recycled by Tetra Pak.

Cllr Martin Elengorn, Cabinet Member for Environment on Richmond Council, said: "As London's greenest borough we are always looking for new ways to be environmentally-friendly. Our recycling rate is over 40% - among the highest in London - so I am sure residents will welcome this new opportunity to recycle even more. I would like to thank all those who regularly use our recycling service, but I also urge even more households to get behind the effort."
